A beggar came to a priory where the porter was distributing money to the poor. He was down to his last few dollars, and was worried about where his next meal would come from. However, because it was a Franciscan priory and not a Dominican priory the porter soon ran out of money to give to the beggars, and when the grayfriar saw that the beggar had a few dollars he said "Can I borrow some of your money, so that all might have some, no matter how insufficient?" The beggar turned over what he had and left the priory poorer for his journey.

A mother had two daughters. The first got married and had a baby girl, and when her own daughter was born she called her mother and said, "Mom, I never really knew how much you loved me until I had a daughter of my own. I guess I never really loved you until now." The other daughter never got married, and never had a child, but when the mother was sick in her old age cared for her while her sister was too busy with the children. When the mother was dying she said to the first daughter, "You have known what it is to be a mother, and thus you were capable of loving me, take all I own." To the other daughter she said, "Because you have never been a mother you cannot have known me, and therefore cannot have loved me. Despite your care for me, I leave you with nothing."
