As I came out from the Campus Ministry fair I saw that all the candles which people had lit in a makeshift sandbox in front of the statue of Mary giving the Rosary to Dominic because of the day had been blown out by the wind. I went and found a lighter in the vestry and lit a tall candle someone had left there. With it I went around and lit all the other candles people had left in the sand.

As I was lighting I realized something. The greatest promise of the Gospel is that Christ will build a Church and preserve it. This means that no matter how fierce the wind, how driving the rain, how painful the cold or how dark the night when the Church's candles go out, the Holy Spirit will light them again. This is why we light candles. To remember the power of God's might, the warmth of his love, the ferocity of his wrath, and the spendor of his grace, and that no matter what we do the Church will always be rekindled, no matter how cold and unlightable the candles seem.
